The figures in the corners are (from top left, clockwise) Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptolomaeus (Ptolemy), Jodocus Hondius (mapmaker and father of Hendrik), and Gerardus Mercator. The other decorations are Apollo in his chariot, representing fire (Ignis), Diana with birds representing air (Aer), Abundantia with animals and horn of plenty representing earth (Terra), and Aquarius with fish and water jug representing water (Aqua). The top center has a globe and the sun, and at the bottom is the moon and a queen being supplicated by people of all nations. (About 1630) This pattern is solidly stitched.
