Based on a medieval Danish ballad, the scene shows Hellelil bidding a silent farewell to Hildebrand, a noble guard with whom she has fallen deeply in love. Their tragic story unfolds as her father, disapproving of their love, orders his sons to kill Hildebrand. Though Hildebrand fells all but one, he dies of his wounds, and Hellelil dies soon after. The embrace, quiet and full of emotion, takes place on a winding turret stair, their final meeting cloaked in secrecy and sorrow. Painted in 1864, this piece evokes a sense of longing and doomed devotion. This pattern is solidly stitched. Any color fabric may be used.
